Suspenders. Brown towels in easy reach.<br \/>\nAbout an hour later, the piano player followed suit,<br \/>\nfolded his coat up neatly, leaned over,<br \/>\nlaid it to rest during the drum solo.<br \/>\nAnd now here they are &#8212; the whole gang.<br \/>\nThey&#8217;re lighting flat matches in dry marble corners.<br \/>\nThigh-high boots over too-bare skin.<br \/>\nBalds heads, stylized facial hair.<br \/>\nThen a busload of high school band kids<br \/>\nhauled up from San Diego<br \/>\npours out all over the sidewalk.<br \/>\nClarinet players. Trumpets players. Sax.<br \/>\nAnd the aged. And the infirm.<br \/>\nOxygen tanks.<br \/>\nWooden legs.<br \/>\nAll rolled in to hear<br \/>\nsome jazz sincere<br \/>\non a wide stage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>They went driving in the rain.
