I saw Nipsey on the streets of NY once, sometime in the mid-80s.
\nI shouted, “Hey — it’s Nipsey Russell!”
\nAnd he looked over at me,
\nand for the first time I think in his whole life, Nipsey stopped smiling.
\nIt was like I could hear the planet itself
\nslow to a loud, crunching halt, its rotation full-stopped
\nby the sour expression on the face of this game-show icon.
\nThe air puckered.
\nAnd then some super villain — I forget which, maybe Electro?
\ndropped down in front of me, picked up a car, and tossed it over my head.
\nOK, maybe it wasn’t Electro then. He isn’t that strong.
\nThe Rhino?
\nAnyways, he tucked Nipsey under his arm
\nlike a smallish bale of hay
\nand he was gone.
\nSometime later the world started turning again.
\nBut I never forgot that day.
