{"id":466,"date":"2007-01-09T07:39:59","date_gmt":"2007-01-09T07:39:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/capellman.com\/cecil1215b\/2007\/01\/09\/the-against-the-day-deathmarch-pause-that-refreshes\/"},"modified":"2007-01-09T07:39:59","modified_gmt":"2007-01-09T07:39:59","slug":"the-against-the-day-deathmarch-pause-that-refreshes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/capellman.com\/cecil1215b\/2007\/01\/09\/the-against-the-day-deathmarch-pause-that-refreshes\/","title":{"rendered":"The Against the Day Deathmarch Pause That Refreshes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back in January aught 5 a hardy band of pioneer types set forth on what some say was the very first blog-based literary deathmarch &#8212; the so-called <b><a href = \"https:\/\/capellman.com\/cecil1215a\/swath\/2005\/01\/04\/the_gravitys_rainbow_deathmarch_our_first_few_steps.html\"> &#8220;Gravity&#8217;s Rainbow Deathmarch,&#8221;<\/a><\/b> in which a crew of modern day Lewis and Clark types banded together and managed, over five months, to read an extremely difficult book.<br \/>\nTwo years later, we&#8217;ve read <b><a href = \"https:\/\/capellman.com\/cecil1215a\/swath\/2005\/05\/31\/the_palefire_deathmarch_week_1.html\">Pale Fire<\/a><\/b> by Nabokov  <b><a href = \"https:\/\/capellman.com\/cecil1215a\/swath\/2005\/08\/16\/the_at_swimtwobirds_deathmarch_week_1.html\">At Swim Two Birds<\/b><\/a>, by Flann O&#8217;Brien, <b><a href = \"https:\/\/capellman.com\/cecil1215a\/swath\/2006\/03\/22\/the_don_quixote_deathmarch_week_1.html\">Don Quixote<\/b><\/a> by Cervantes, and <a href = \"https:\/\/capellman.com\/cecil1215a\/swath\/2006\/10\/18\/the_deathmarch_to_the_lighthouse_week_1.html\"><b>To the Lighthouse<\/b><\/a> by Woolf. And now it&#8217;s time for perhaps our greatest feat yet. Not only will we read a difficult book, but it will be a difficult book that was published in this century. Specifically: <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/159420120X?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=cecivort-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=159420120X\">Against the Day<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=cecivort-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=159420120X\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/><\/b>, Pynchon&#8217;s recently released behemoth.<br \/>\n<b>But when&#8217;s it start?<\/b><br \/>\nThe spines crack Tuesday January 30th. All are welcome. We&#8217;ll probably need a thousand people to join this time to get three people through, which seems unlikely, but, ya know, tell a friend. If you&#8217;d like to join up, this would be a great time to <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/159420120X?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=cecivort-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=159420120X\">pick up a copy<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=cecivort-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=159420120X\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/><\/b>. But try if you can to hold off on starting it till January 30th so we can all leap onto the trail in synch. The dust cloud&#8217;s purtier that way.<br \/>\n<b>Dare I ask&#8230;prizes?<\/b><br \/>\nAs ever, we&#8217;ll be tackling around 50 pages a week. And yep, there will be the nigh magical lure of mug prizes for up to 30 people who finish and comment every week.<br \/>\n<b>So what now?<\/b><br \/>\nWell, right here on this very thread would be an excellent place for you to sound off if you plan on marching, with your excitement, your fear, your loathing, all your strongest emotions. We&#8217;ll need to put that behind us soon. For on the &#8216;march we can only afford ourselves steely resolve.
