Great-grandfather’s beard

been thinking about
my great-grandfather’s beard.

I can’t compete with that.

Puffy-white sketched
lawyer-still.
Coffee, ironed tablecloths, small spoons.
Not one drop swings
loose.

Cigars for all. Corona de Luxe
smoke drifts
over old Europe squares.
Sons in perfect pose. Even the camera man
had his act together.

Aw Cec–you’ll get there. The puffy white comes with time, and you don’t need cameramen with acts together anymore, just Photoshop. 🙂

    you should post a pic.
my maternal grandfather was bald as a cue ball by 26. i haven’t found any beards amongst my ancestors, although legend holds that there is an influential russian rabbi back there somewhere. and, he must have had a beard. i will find you!
but, i’m drinking a 2001 south african pinotage, and it’s delicious.

And he had those walks too
    to the equivalent of 7-11
but with a chimney and candles
    and he looked, maybe
and may have saw the end
    of our bowling alleys

Ah, so THAT’s why you shaved your beard.
Btw, my maternal grandmother had a marvelous beard. I can’t compete with that.
